Amtrak Engine 520 - 527

Engines 520 - 527 have been rebuilt from GP40 frames that were given GP38 parts and prime movers and head end power was installed in the leftover space. Therefore, they were given the designation of GP38-h3. These units are used for service with camp cars and regional runs that stay below 65mph. 526 was tried on the Downeaster service but proved unsatisfactory at the higher speeds.
