A large section of the Maine Central Mountain Division was shutdown for a number of years when Guilford Transportation decided not to service anything past the Sappi mill in Westbrook, but the Northern New England Passenger Rail Authority (NNEPRA) chose it for the location of the Portland Amtrak Station, and there has been renewed interest in freight operations. Rehabilitation work was under way for a time with a proposal from the Golden Eagle Rail Corp. to run freight and passenger service to Fryburg and possibly beyond but that seems to have stalled now.
Then there is the section operated by Conway Scenic Railroad that goes up through Crawford Notch. They have been a steady passenger operator for many years.
