Maine Eastern had two EMD FL-9s they used for their passenger service. These engines were redesigned FP-9s, the frame was extended to accommodate a larger steam heat boiler, a bigger capacity head end power unit and dual power equipment for operating in the tunnels of New York City as the design was for the New York, New Haven, & Hartford. This resulted in the front truck having two powered axles and the rear having an unpowered axle in the middle of two powered axles.
